School History

Our History

Felix Cook Jr. Elementary opened its doors in August 2006, replacing the former Sanderson Elementary School. The school was officially dedicated on October 15, 2006, and has since served the families of Trinity–Houston Gardens and surrounding communities with pride and purpose.

We are a Fine Arts Magnet Campus, offering high-quality instruction in dance, music, theater, and visual arts, alongside strong academic programs.

Our Namesake

Felix Cook Jr. was a trailblazer in Houston education and a lifelong advocate for students. Born in Houston in 1926, he graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Wiley College, where he played on the national championship football team. He later received a master's in education from Texas Southern University and completed additional studies at the University of Houston.

Mr. Cook served 36 years in Houston ISD, rising from teacher and coach to become the first African-American principal of Sharpstown High School, and eventually the Deputy Superintendent of Personnel. His deep commitment to equity, community, and excellence in education left a lasting impact across HISD.

In 2006, Felix Cook Jr. became the first living African-American educator in HISD to have a school named in his honor. Our campus stands as a tribute to his extraordinary life of service, leadership, and educational excellence.
