Our School

Welcome to Felix Cook Jr. Elementary Home of the Stallions!

At Felix Cook Jr. Elementary School, being a Stallion means being part of a community built on excellence, perseverance, leadership, creativity, and pride. We are more than a school, we are a family committed to ensuring that every child who enters our doors is provided with the knowledge, experiences, encouragement, and opportunities needed to reach their highest potential.

Located in Houston’s Trinity–Houston Gardens community, Cook Elementary proudly serves students from Pre-K through fifth grade. Our school opened in 2006 and carries the name and legacy of Felix Cook Jr., a trailblazing Houston educator whose career was dedicated to leadership, equity, service, and educational excellence. As Cook Stallions, we strive to continue that legacy by creating an environment where students are encouraged to work hard, dream big, and understand that their circumstances do not determine how far they can go.

Our Academic Commitment

For the 2026–2027 school year, our focus is GROWTH.

We are committed to ensuring that students do not simply attend school—they learn, progress, achieve, and experience success.

Our classrooms are places where students are expected to think critically, communicate their ideas, solve problems, collaborate with others, and take ownership of their learning. As an NES campus, Cook emphasizes consistent, high-quality instruction, strong thinking skills, regular monitoring of student progress, and additional support or academic challenge based on individual student needs.

Our goal is to strengthen student achievement in reading, writing, mathematics, and science while ensuring students develop the skills necessary to demonstrate what they know.

STAAR preparation is part of this work, but our vision extends beyond a single assessment. We want students to understand concepts deeply, apply their knowledge in new situations, communicate effectively, and become confident problem-solvers.

When our students sit down to take STAAR, we want them to feel prepared because they have spent the entire year learning, practicing, thinking, growing, and believing in themselves.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Cook Elementary, we believe learning should extend beyond textbooks and classroom walls.

During the 2026–2027 school year, one of our priorities is providing students with meaningful field trips, enrichment opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and exposure to possibilities they may not encounter during a traditional school day.

A wonderful example is the opportunity for our fifth-grade students to experience NASA through an interactive educational field trip. This experience allows students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Students can see that the science and math concepts they study have applications far beyond an assessment. Experiences like these encourage curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and excitement about STEM while reinforcing skills that can support their academic growth and STAAR preparation.

We want our Stallions to experience the world, ask questions about it, and begin imagining their place in it.

Fine Arts, Creativity & Student Expression

Cook Elementary is proud to be a Fine Arts Magnet Campus, where creativity and self-expression are important parts of the educational experience. Our students have opportunities to explore areas such as dance, music, theater, and visual arts, giving them multiple ways to discover their talents, develop new interests, and express who they are.

At Cook, we believe the arts are an important part of educating the whole child. Fine Arts experiences help students develop skills that reach far beyond the stage, music room, or art classroom. Through the arts, our Stallions can strengthen their confidence, creativity, communication, collaboration, discipline, focus, and perseverance.

We want our students to understand that there are many different ways to be successful and many different ways to shine. One student may discover a love for performing on stage, while another may find their voice through music, movement, acting, drawing, painting, or creating something entirely their own. Providing these opportunities allows students to explore talents they may not have known they possessed.

Fine Arts also gives our students opportunities to perform, create, and proudly share their talents with their families, classmates, and community. School performances, programs, showcases, and special events allow our Stallions to experience the excitement of seeing their hard work come together while developing the confidence to stand in front of others and say, “This is what I can do.”

We also recognize the strong connection between creativity and academic learning. The skills students practice through Fine Arts—such as listening carefully, following a process, practicing until they improve, working collaboratively, taking constructive feedback, thinking creatively, and presenting with confidence—are skills that can support them throughout the school day and beyond elementary school.

During the 2026–2027 school year, we want to continue strengthening the Fine Arts experience at Cook by creating opportunities for students to participate, perform, showcase their talents, and experience different forms of artistic expression. We want our Fine Arts programs to contribute to the energy, pride, and identity of our campus.

Most importantly, we want every Cook Stallion to have an opportunity to discover something that makes them excited about coming to school. Whether that passion is dance, music, theater, visual arts, STEM, academics, athletics, or another area of interest, Cook Elementary should be a place where students are encouraged to explore it, develop it, and proudly share it.

At Cook, we don't just teach students what to learn—we give them opportunities to discover who they can become.
